I wonder if somewhere there’s someone left from the statistics office in Rhodesia who would know what the numbers were for Rhodesia and could compare them with the (largely nonexistent) statistics produced by Zimbabwe-Rhodesia and later Zimbabwe. If I remember correctly Zimbabwe intentionally had a minimal statistics office, because tracking statistics would have shown the internal blockades/ethnic cleansing “post-liberation”.
So the point is that when a country starts to produce something like coherent data we can then assess it as not so poor. And when datat starts to erode - eg Russia and India - we can wonder about what is happening?
Strengthening government institutions is the only way a poor country can become rich in the modern world. There is no rich country today with weak government institutions.
One solution might be to subdivide and become smaller. The smaller the state the easier it should be to know what's happening (and then do something about it).
